Our desire to create improvement in our lives motivates us daily to seek new ways of being, create new possibilities in our lives and make decisions that are bolder and different.

Essentially, we are creating a new idea of ourselves...a new self-image.

While the old image falls away, a new image emerges...of the ideal person we want to be, the person we KNOW we CAN be.

We're inspired. Motivated to become this idea of ourselves.

Nowhere is this more apparent than with the Liberty League business. When we look at the results that are possible here and the short time frame in which they can occur, it's evident that the evolution of the self-image plays a huge part.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ -- 08/06/09 -- Liberty League International, a personal development company, topped expectations with 1,000 attendees at their recent five-day Summit Conference held at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island of Hawaii. When I say Think and Grow Rich, what comes to your mind?
Almost everyone in sales and those interested in personal development have read this classic by Napoleon Hill at least once. And almost everyone who's read it has a positive comment. Many (like me) will say, "Turning point in my life."

Everyone has a turning point in their quest for lifelong learning. Everyone has their Aha! In your personal development, it's what you choose to listen to, watch or read that enhances your understanding of your life and teaches you what you need to do to succeed.

Napoleon Hill's 1937 quote sets the standard. "Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve."

And once you have the information, it's all about what you are willing to do to take advantage of it.

Most people know Napoleon Hill was the author of Think and Grow Rich. The person Hill emulated and studied was Orison Swett Marden. Not many know that. Marden was the leading positive-attitude genius of the 20th century. Well-known before 1930-almost unknown today. He was a founding father of personal development and positive thought. Aha!

Author of more than 40 books, Marden also was the founder of SUCCESS magazine. Here are a few of his words of wisdom from the book he wrote in 1908, He Who Thinks He Can. "Every child should be taught to expect success."
"The man who has learned the art of seeing things looks with his brain."
"The best educated people are those who are always learning, always absorbing knowledge from every possible source and at every opportunity."
"People do not realize the immense value of utilizing spare minutes."
"No substitute has ever yet been discovered for honesty."
"Poverty is of no value except as a vantage ground for a starting point."
These are quotes worth learning and passing on to others. One hundred years old!
"Learn More about Orison Swett Marden."

Based on my personal experience and personal Ahas!, I'd like to challenge you with the rules of personal development and give you some examples of what I have learned so you might make your own plan to succeed or enhance the one you have.

1.Expose yourself to knowledge.At the end of a seminar I gave on positive attitude, I received an evaluation from a woman named Mary with a comment that read, "I wish I would have heard this 30 years ago." I got goose bumps of sadness and thought of a Jim Rohn quote: "All the information you need to succeed already exists; the only problem is you're not exposing yourself to it." This information existed 30 years ago. Mary just hadn't exposed herself to it.
Jim Rohn is known as America's leading business philosopher. His CD, The Art of Exceptional Living, is among the modern classics of personal development. Jim Rohn is the current master of inspiration and Aha! He imparts wisdom in every sentence. Between Marden and Rohn, there is a long list of valuable books. I owe my career success to these books and to personal development information to which I have exposed myself. Most of the books are more than 50 years old. Many with religious connotations-but still preaching the right words and thoughts. One of the most notable is The Power of Positive Thinking by NormanVincent Peale. Biblical and brilliant.

2. Simple is powerful.If you read it and it seems too easy or too hokey, reread it. It's probably part of your personal development foundation. One of my early Aha! moments of personal development was the simplicity of the message. Sometimes it's so simple, you go right past it without understanding the impact it can make. A classic example is the eternal How to Win Friends and InfluencePeople by Dale Carnegie. In 1936 he wrote, "You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you." How many salespeople could benefi t from that single Aha!? I think all of them. Interesting to note that Dale Carnegie's lessons still are being taught in the classroom 70 years later!

3. Think and apply to improve.In As a Man Thinketh, published in 1902, James Allen says, "A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts." Thinking what can be done is at the core of your personal development. About 54 years later, in the million-seller, The Strangest Secret, Earl Nightingale writes, "We become what we think about all day long." Get it? In 1969, I listened to Glenn W. Turner on a cassette tape: "Act as though you have already begun to achieve. Not fake it-live it."

4. Take a daily dose.Think about the time-worn expression, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Apply that to personal development, and it means learn and apply one new thing every day. At the end of a year you will have 365 new pieces of information.

5. The older the better.If you want a new idea, read a book that's 100 years old. "The best educated people are those who are always learning, always absorbing knowledge from every possible source and at every opportunity." -Marden, 1908. Or, "History has demonstrated that the most notable winners usually encountered heartbreaking obstacles before they triumphed. They won because they refused to become discouraged by their defeats." -B.C. Forbes, 1919.

6. Personal development and positive attitude are joined at the hip-and at the brain. And there is another component-being of service."There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative." -Clement Stone, 1946. Add that to the 5000-year-old Chinese proverb, "To Serve is to Rule."

7. Do it even as your butt falls off.In 1898, Elbert Hubbard wrote an essay titled, Message to Garcia. Deliver the message, get the job done, complete the task-no matter what. Many have read that essay. Few have emulated it. Personal development challenges you to think forward. "Greater than the tread of mighty armies is an idea whose time has come." -Victor Hugo, 1874.
Personal development challenges you to be your best. "You cannot mandate productivity; you must provide the tools to let people become their best." -Steve Jobs, 1988.
"I am the greatest of all time." -Muhammad Ali, 1963.
Personal development challenges you to make decisions based on the person you seek to become. "The highest reward for a person's toil is not what they get for it, but what they become by it." -John Ruskin, 1869.

Wondering where you can "find more time" to devote to your own success? "It has been my observation that most people get ahead during the time that others waste." -Henry Ford, 1901. Just a thought.

The key word is not development; the key word is personal. Do it for yourself, in your own way, and make your own time for it-or not.

“The times, they are a-changing.” Bob Dylan wrote those words more than a half century ago, but they are at least as accurate now as they were then.

“The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind.” That was Bob Dylan, too, at about the same time. In today’s economy, that one is more true.

We are no longer a Western economy or even an American one. We are truly connected to each other in a global way. Meteorologists tell us that the wind blowing through the California Redwoods one day is the same wind blowing across the plains of Siberia the next. So go on and get used to it. Take a big, deep breath of Siberian air. We are all in this together.

Let’s go back a few years before Dylan. Try this, from Hamlet:
“To be, or not to be, that is the question:Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to sufferThe slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,Or to take arms against a sea of troublesAnd by opposing… end them.”

When situations change (as they always do), the rules are sometimes changed as well. What was red one day might be green the next. What was down is up, right is left, and we can become so discouraged and confused that we are tempted to simply lie down, cry, and resign ourselves to a lifetime of slings and arrows.

Truth, on the other hand, never changes. Life’s principles remain steadfast in good times and bad. Therefore, I am reminding us all that now is not the time for fear or inaction; now is the time to “take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing… end them.”

Yes, you will need to act. But first… think.

Prospering in today’s economy will require an extraordinary examination of your personal commitment to “the truth” as it relates to your industry in general and your own business or job in particular. In dealing with clients from many different backgrounds, I have noticed that, quite often, we do not make decisions according to what is true. Rather, we make decisions according to what we want to be true. Or what we wish were true. This is usually a recipe for disaster.

Remember the eleventh commandment: Thou shalt not kid thyself. Simply put, in today’s global economy, what is your value? How much are you worth? The question is worth the time you might take to get an accurate answer. Most folks are subconsciously asking the questions “How much can I get?” or “What can I persuade someone to pay me?” or “How much can I charge?” or “How much do people like me traditionally make?”

The question that will lead you to the best decisions, however, is “What is my value to this situation, to this person, to this business?”

Know this: The only people who will never fail—even in bad economic times—are the people who accurately discern their value or the value of their product and can prove that value to their customers. Yes, sometimes value is a perception, but even perceived value can be agreed upon by millions of people at once.

As an author and speaker, I am tasked with the dual responsibility of knowing the value of a specific product (a book) and of a service (a speaking engagement). To find the answers blowing in my financial wind, I need to be certain that I know the truth about my value in these areas. Can a person pay the price of The Traveler’s Gift and, after reading it, feel happy in the knowledge that he or she got their money’s worth? Was the value there? Was what they learned and were able to apply in their life and business worth $20? If so, the books will continue to sell.
If a company pays a certain amount for me to speak or do a seminar and they can track the production and profit that occurred after I spoke, does that benefit me or is it a harbinger of bleak times to come in my career? Did they ultimately make more money with my information and direction than they paid me to speak? Was the value there? If so, I will continue to be booked.

In tough economic times, I suspect there are few corporations who can afford to have a speaker merely as entertainment or “because we’ve always had a speaker.” Therefore, I must honestly ask the question, “What is my service worth? Am I providing value well beyond cost?”
We want to provide value in all areas of our lives. We should strive to provide value as a neighbor and friend, as a member of our church or civic organization, and to our families. I want to provide value to you. That is a primary motivation for me as I post these blogs. I must continue to show value to my wife. So far, she has stayed with me for almost 20 years and seems to be happy. So there must be value to her in our relationship beyond the vows we took.

(Frankly, I am thrilled with the value Polly continues to show me!)

Obviously, in a correspondence of this sort, we are all working together. I don’t know enough about your life’s situation to guide the specific questions you must ask in our current economic climate. I only know that you must ask questions. Seek the truth about yourself, your products, your service…. The quality of your answers can only be determined by the quality of your questions. Do you want good answers in your life? Ask good questions.

And start with this one: How much am I worth?

A whopping 86 percent of companies expect recent financial market changes to affect employee benefits in the next year, according to a recent survey. Here’s a look at the where employers are likely to make cuts.

Layoffs
Large employers, including Citigroup and Sun Microsystems, have already begun massive layoffs. Americans lost 240,000 jobs in October. And the current 6.5 percent unemployment rate is the highest since 2004. Analysts predict that many more layoffs are still to come. A mid-October survey of 248 companies by the consulting firm Watson Wyatt found that 26 percent of employers expect to make layoffs in the next 12 months.

Hiring Freezes
Firms are likely to institute multiple cost-saving measures in tandem. “No single action here is going to help companies weather the storm,” says Laura Sejen, global director of strategic rewards at Watson Wyatt. “Companies are looking at the full array of cuts they might make, and I think they are pulling a number of these triggers.” As an alternative or in addition to layoffs, companies may stop hiring new people and leave some vacant positions unfilled. A quarter of the companies Watson Wyatt surveyed plan to freeze hiring in the next year.

Higher Health Costs
Premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance climbed to $12,680 annually for family coverage this year. Employees pay an average of $3,354 out of their paychecks to cover their share of the cost, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation survey of 2,832 companies. “Health insurance is steadily becoming less comprehensive,” says Kaiser President and CEO Drew Altman. “With rising deductibles, more and more people face a substantial amount out of pocket for their healthcare before their insurance fully kicks in.” About 18 percent of employees currently have deductibles of at least $1,000, up from 12 percent last year. And 25 percent of companies plan to increase employee contributions to health insurance in the next year, Watson Wyatt found.

Travel Restrictions
Extravagant company travel may be a thing of the past in many industries. Some 34 percent of companies have already added or increased restrictions to the company travel policy, and an additional 25 percent plan to do so soon. Some companies are cracking down on nonessential travel and increasing Internet and teleconferencing as an alternative to meetings in person. Many employees are also being encouraged or required to use public transportation for local trips and book economy flights for necessary travel.

Training Cuts
Helping employees to develop advanced skills usually helps the bottom line of a company. But on-the-job training is expensive and time intensive, and immediate results are not always realized. Some 18 percent of companies plan to reduce or eliminate training for employees. Keeping your skills up to date on your own, however, could help keep you employed.
Canceled parties. Most industries aren’t feeling very jolly this year. About 19 percent of companies have either downgraded or canceled the holiday party, and an additional 18 percent plan to, Watson Wyatt found. A handful of companies--mostly manufacturing firms--even plan to institute mandatory holiday shutdowns to save on operating expenses.

Salary Freezes
Workers used to getting an annual cost-of-living raise may be out of luck next year. Four percent of companies have already frozen salaries and 12 percent more plan to. “As a cost-saving measure, it can have a fairly significant impact in terms of managing increases in cost,” says Sejen. “Typically, it would be for 12 months, and then the organization would revisit the decision.”
Reduced merit increases. Don’t count on getting a large holiday bonus or merit pay increase next year either. Approximately 28 percent of employers have already reduced their merit pay budgets because of recent financial events. Among those employers, the projected raise is now 2.5 percent for 2009, down from 3.7 percent.

Pension Freezes
Many companies no longer want to bear the burden of providing traditional pensions for employees. Sometimes companies stop allowing new employees to join the plan. Other firms promise to pay the benefits already accrued but don’t allow workers to earn any additional benefits. Some 11 percent of companies have already frozen their pension plans and an additional 4 percent plan to do so in the next year, Watson Wyatt found.
Cut 401(k) matches. Several large companies, including General Motors and Frontier, have stopped contributing to employees' 401(k) plans. Another 4 percent of companies plan to eliminate the match in the next year. “Whether or not your employer is able to match your contribution, it is still of the utmost importance for American workers to continue contributing,” says Tom Ruggie, founder and president of Ruggie Wealth Management in Tavares, Fla. “Investors must not forget that the compounding growth of a 401(k) over time will allow them to grow additional assets off of savings they continue to put in." Many companies, including Ford Motor Co. and Charles Schwab, eliminated their 401(k) matches during the last recession, but returned them later when the bottom line improved. Allow me to share my story.I spent 23 years of my adult life (not to mention most of my formative childhood years) believing that I had to live my life according to someone else's rules. I was locked into a formula that was essentially prescribed to me by the environment (parents, schools, government, church, etc.) in which I was raised. It went something like this: get a good education, get a good job, work hard and keep your nose to the grindstone, scrimp and save your money, put off what you'd love to do until later, avoid taking any risks, and if you're lucky you'll get to enjoy yourself in your twilight years. Does this sound vaguely familiar? In my particular case, it actually was working out reasonably well. I had a "good job," was earning a reasonable salary, and had achieved a degree of success in my life. Or at least that's how it appeared on the outside. But on the inside, I was miserable. I was caught up in the struggle of my day-to-day life -- quite literally choosing to make it a struggle without ever realizing that's what I was doing. I was in a sleep walk of day-to-day drudgery. I was most definitely not living the life of my dreams, the life I love. Until one day I simply decided it was time to stop. I chose to wake up. Finally there came a day when I simply couldn't take it anymore, and so I made the decision that it was time to stop. I made the decision to change the way I was living and to jump off of the treadmill. I made the decision to change my life. I made the decision to begin living my life on my terms. The effect was magical. A thousand-pound weight was lifted off my shoulders. I felt relieved. I felt alive. I felt inspired. I began actually enjoying my life. And so now here I am suggesting to you that you can begin to live the life you want -- the life you love -- right now beginning today. Because all it really takes is for you to make the decision. Oh, I know that sounds simplistic. Yet it's true, and deep down there's a part of you that knows it's true. By truly making that decision -- that single, mental decision -- everything changes. Everything changes because your perspective changes. For me, my decision led to some very explicit actions. I resigned from my job and decided to build my own business with my wife, Michelle, from home. Frankly I had no idea how any of it was going to work and how we'd be able to pay the bills or keep the kids fed and clothed, except that I believed it would. Looking back now, I suppose I just knew it would. Well, go figure, things have worked out beautifully. The sky didn't fall. The world didn't end. Things have certainly changed, mind you. We don't hang out with all of the same people we used to. Our activities have become more focused on family and friends as opposed to fitting things around my job. We live a much more relaxed life. We have more fun. We have fun every day. What about you? What do you love? What are the things you'd love to do right now with your life? Can you feel them calling you? If you can, then listen to and follow them. For there is one thing that is absolutely true: there is no need to struggle in your life. You make real whatever you believe is real. This is the basic law of the universe, the law of attraction. So the first thing to do is to let go of the notion that it's different for you ,or that somehow you are not allowed to live the life you want. Let go of the notion that you're somehow not deserving of that privilege. Stop marginalizing yourself. You deserve to be happy and enjoy your life. That's the whole point of living -- to experience the joy of it. Yes, the entire idea of following your bliss can be extremely frightening. And fear leads to all sorts of wild emotions, but that's part of being human. Remember, though, fear is all in your head. It's all about what you imagine might happen. Those wild emotions that you feel as a result of your fears need not define you. In his book, "Conversations with God," Neale Donald Walsh tells us we have three tools of creation. They are thought, words, and action. It is your thoughts, your words, and your actions that define you -- for they are the summation of who you are being. So this begs the question, who do you want to be? Get in touch with your own truth about who you want to be and then start being that person right now, today. Begin to live your passion and enjoy your life. It's much easier than you suspect. It's remarkably easy to let the "how" unfold; just let your inspiration be your guide. Your inspiration will never misguide you. By being focused on who and what you want to be, you will be inspired to think the thoughts, speak the words, and take the actions that make that being your reality. The more you are being, the more you'll be doing and the more you'll be having what you want. The more you will be living the life that you love. And so the circle repeats, over and over, with each cycle more strongly reinforcing who you are and what you love to be. It's a magnificent thing. It's freedom. Is America Still the Land of Opportunity?

A recent Survey of Consumer Finances conducted by the Federal Reserve Board revealed these statistics about the state of America’s finances.

Do any of these facts hit home with you?

The typical American family earns about $45,000 per year. From 2001 to 2004, family debt increased 33% (adjusted for inflation). Surprisingly little of this debt stems from unnecessary spending. Instead, credit is being used to pay for necessities like housing, household expenses and health care, particularly in low- and middle-income families.

Average net worth, which grew rapidly during the boom of the 1990s, rose only 1.5% between 2001 and 2004 for the average American family. In other words, for most of us, the worth of our investments is not keeping up with the inflation rate.

The middle class is being squeezed more tightly than ever. Among the wealthiest 10% of Americans, net worth rose to $831,600, or a 6.5% increase from 2001. Meanwhile, the net worth of those in the bottom 25% fell 1.5% to $13,300.

More than a third -- 36% -- of those who owe more than $10,000 on their cards have household incomes under $50,000. 13% who owe that much have household incomes under $30,000. The percentage of disposable income used to pay debts is near record highs.

The report doesn’t point out these more unsettling statistics:

In February, 2007, the US Commerce Department reported that the personal savings rate for 2006 was a negative 1%. The rate for 2004 was a negative .4%. For comparison, in the midst of the Depression in 1933, the PSR was -1.5%. If 2007 figures show a decrease similar to those of 2006, we’ll have a worse record than during the Depression. According to a new Federal Reserve data-based economic analysis commissioned by the Consumer Federation of America, “...more than half of American households (56 percent) are behind where they should be in saving for a comfortable retirement.” A related CFA public opinion survey found that 59% of Americans do not expect to maintain their current standard of living in retirement.

FDR’s famous statement still applies: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” But think about this: All kinds of fears have always held people back from trying to improve their lives. We’ve used fear as a convenient excuse not to get on with the lives we’d like to live. It’s so much easier to stay where we are, complaining that we’ll never get ahead.The opportunity is there for the taking, but you must be prepared to leave your comfort zone, summon up your strength and determination, and set a course towards wealth accumulation. While money isn’t everything, it can certainly do a lot to alleviate uncertainty and to enrich your life and the lives of those you care most about.Worrying about the future doesn’t change it. No one has ever been able to predict what will happen, or when, or why. You only have today and the lessons you have learned from your past. You can take charge of today’s reality and make it sing with tomorrow’s dreams.

Horatio Alger may have been right in the 1800s when he claimed that anyone willing to work hard could succeed. Today, the picture is different. It is painfully possible to work very, very hard and not get ahead. When I first heard about network marketing, I was against it. But after opening my mind, I began to see advantages that few other business opportunities offer. Long-term success in life is a reflection of your education, life experience and personal character. Many network-marketing companies provide personal development training in those key areas. Most schools train people for the E or S quadrants, and that is great if those are the quadrants in which you want to spend your life. Most MBA programs are training students for high-paying jobs in the corporate world as an E, not a B.What if you're in the E or S quadrant and you want to change? What if you want to be in the B quadrant? Where do you find the education that trains you for that quadrant? I recommend a network-marketing business. I recommend the industry for people who want to change and get the necessary skills and attitude training to be successful in the B quadrant. Being an entrepreneur and building a B quadrant business is one of the toughest challenges a person can take on. The reason there are more people in the E and S quadrants is simply because those quadrants are less demanding than the B quadrant. As they say, "If it was easy, everyone would do it."Personally, I had to learn how to overcome my self-doubt, shyness and fear of rejection. And I had to learn how to pick myself up and keep going after I failed. These are some of the personal traits a person must develop if they are to be successful in a B quadrant business, regardless of whether it is a network-marketing business, a franchise or an entrepreneurial startup.
An important personal skill required for any B quadrant business is leadership. Are you able to overcome your own fears and have others overcome their fears in order to get the job done? This is a skill the Marine Corps taught me. As Marine Corps officers, it was imperative that we be able to lead others into battle, even though we were all terrified of dying. I meet many people in the S quadrant, the specialist or small business owners, who would like to expand, but they simply lack leadership skills. No one wants to follow them. The employees do not trust their leader or the leader does not inspire the employees to better themselves. As mentioned earlier, Forbes defined a big-business owner, a B quadrant business owner, as a person who controls a business with more than 500 employees. This definition is why leadership skills are vial for the B quadrant.Where could you find a business that will invest the time in your education, your personal development and building your own business? The answer is: most network-marketing business.Building a B quadrant business is not an easy task. So you need to ask yourself, "Do I have what it takes? Am I willing to go beyond my comfort zones? Am I willing to be led and willing to learn to lead? Is there a very rich person inside of me, ready to come out?" If the answer is "Yes," start looking for a network-marketing business that has a great training program. I would focus less on the products or the compensation plans and more on the education and personal development program the company offers.
A network-marketing business is a B quadrant business because it meets several criteria I look for in a business or investment. Those criteria are:
Leverage: Can I train other people to work for me?
Control: Do I have a protected system that belongs to me?
Creativity: Will the business allow me to be creative and develop my own personal style and talents?
Expandability: Can my business grow indefinitely?
Predictability: Is my income predictable if I do what is expected of me? If I am successful, and keep expanding my business, will my income increase with my success and hard work?
Isn't Network Marketing A Pyramid Scheme?I am often asked if network marketing is a pyramid scheme. My reply is that corporations are really pyramid schemes. A corporation has only one person at the top, generally the CEO, and everyone else below. The following is an example of a typical corporate pyramid: Compare that to a network-marketing business system:
A true network-marketing business is the exact opposite of a traditional business model. A network-marketing business is designed to bring you up to the top, not keep you down at the bottom. A true network-marketing business does not succeed unless it brings people up to the top.
The following are some other points worth mentioning:
Tax breaks increase. By starting a network-marketing business in your spare time and keeping your regular job, you begin to gain the tax advantages of the rich. A person with a part-time business can take more tax deductions than employees can. For example, you may be able to deduct car expenses, gasoline, some meals and entertainment. Obviously, you need to check with a CPA for exact rulings on your situation. And the cost of your CPA is tax-deductible. In most cases, an employee cannot deduct CPA expenses. In other words, the government will give you a tax break for advise on how to pay less in taxes.
Meet like-minded people. One of the advantages I had is that my friends also wanted to be in the B quadrant. When I first started out, most of my E quadrant friends thought I was nuts. They could not understand shy I did not want a steady job or a steady paycheck. So an important part of becoming a B is to surround yourself with other people who are Bs and want you to become a B.
Give yourself time. It takes time to be successful in any of the quadrants. Just as it takes time to climb to the top of the corporate ladder as an E, or become a successful doctor or lawyer In the S quadrant, it takes time and dedication to become successful in the B quadrant. It took me years before I built a successful B quadrant business.
Network-marketing companies are patient. One of the beauties of a network-marketing business is that it will invest in you, even if you are not successful.
In the corporate world, if you are not successful in six months to a year, you are often fired. In the network-marketing world, as long as you are willing to put in the time, most companies will work with you in your development. After all, they want you to get to the top.
Leverage the systems that are already in place. These systems are already tried and proven, which allows you to hit the ground running instead of trying to build the internal system of a new company.
In conclusion, after opening my closed mind, I could finally see some of the unique benefits the network-marketing industry offers people who want more out of their lives. Generally, it costs much less to get started in a network-marketing company than to build a business on your own.

It requires an entrepreneurial spirit, and that means focus and perseverance. I do not recommend network marketing to people who are not highly self-motivated. Another important aspect of network marketing is that it is inherently social, so if you are not a social or outgoing person, I'd think twice about going into it. Sociability is a requirement. Just like in advertising, there's no point in having a fantastic advertising campaign if the product isn't equally fantastic. Also keep in mind that if you decide to become a distributor, you will be legally responsible for the claims you make about the product, the company and the available opportunities. But above all, make sure the product is worth your energy and total devotion. Otherwise, you could be energetically spinning your wheels. Robert mentions the importance of going beyond your comfort zone when it comes to network marketing. He also mentions giving yourself enough time. These are good points to consider. I would also agree that having leadership qualities is critical for success. You definitely have to have a take-charge, can-do attitude. As with any other undertaking, know everything you can about what you're doing before you begin. Network marketing has proven itself to be a viable and rewarding source of income, and the challenges could be just right for you. There have been some remarkable examples of success, and those successes have been earned through diligence, enthusiasm and the right product combined with timing. As with so many issues we have discussed before, there are tangibles and intangibles involved, but success is not a total mystery, and that applies to network marketing as well. Most people have heard of focus groups, a research tool that advertising agencies use when they are testing a new product. They will go out to different locations and simply ask everyday people what they like and don't like about a new product. Its best if you can keep the focus group idea close at hand when you are deciding about a product. Just because you like it doesn't mean everyone else will. Finding a common denominator in product appeal will matter.My nutshell advice about network marketing is to do your research and then put everything you've got into your product. One of the biggest challenges I see in the home business industry is that people often don't make the transition from "thinking like an employee" to "thinking like a business owner". This shows up in a lot of ways but here's one example that might be of assistance to someone today. FACT: There is only one of you. And you only have 24 hours a day. Basic math tells us that there's only so much that you can do yourself. So, part of becoming wealthy means identifying the areas of your business that make you the MOST money...and spend most of your working time on those areas. To do this, you need to decide what your time is worth. Do you feel that you're worth $100 an hour? $50 an hour? $10 an hour? The truth is that your time is far more valuable than you can imagine.

But let's start with your present time-value with a simple exercise:
1. Take your annual income
2. Divide it by 52 to get your weekly income
3. Divide it by 40 to get an hourly income

Let's assume that you discovered that your time is presently worth $50 an hour.Now, let's say that you need a new website developed. So, you say to yourself, "Let me see....I've got Adobe Photoshop so I can figure out how to do the graphics. And I think there's a copy of Microsoft Frontpage on my computer. So I'll go through the basic tutorials and figure this out. What are these layers they keep talking about? What do they mean by closing my tags?" By the time you have it all figured out, you've spent 8 hours making a very basic website. Eight hours. A whole day. At your present rate of $50 an hour, you just spent $400 to work on something that you're not very good at. And it was also a job that you could've outsourced for less than $150 to someone who IS good at making websites, is a professional at it, and who could get it done in a fraction of the time. You see how this works? If you want your business to produce $100,000 per year....you have to make sure that you don't spend your "work" time engaged in something that adds less than $50 of value to the company.
(Note: these figures are fictitious. Remember what I said above. Your time is worth far more than you imagine. Becoming more valuable -- from a business standpoint -- is easier than you imagine.)

So, part of making the shift from employee-mindset to entrepreneur-mindset is in realizing that you can't AFFORD to do it all yourself. What are the most profitable things you can do in your business? What are the least profitable things that you do in your business? Identify those factors, outsource as much of the low-profit items as you can....and you'll have more time and freedom to spend more time on the things that DO get your better results. And a lot of free "play time" as well!

For the past ten years, I have been a burned out and exhausted English teacher who always felt guilty because I couldn't spend quality time with my husband and five year old twins. When I finally decided to take control of my life, I was motivated to create the freedom in my life that I knew I deserved.

I went in search of a business. I looked at everything from Franchises to Brick and Mortar companies. I had searched high and low on the internet. And I kept coming across the same things.
